SA Falconry Association
Founding
The journey to establish a unified voice for South African falconry began in 1990 with a meeting in Kokstad, Natal. The vision materialized in 1991 at the NFC AGM in Calvin Grove, where representatives from all provinces finalized the South African Falconry Association (SAFA).
SAFA’s mission was to coordinate provincial clubs and foster consistent standards nationally. The first SAFA field meet in Dullstroom in 1992 marked a significant milestone, attracting falconers from across the country. The popularity of these meets led to subsequent events in various locations, including Maselspoort, Aliwal North, Awimaweh Resort, and Lekoa Lodge, showcasing the best of South African falconry.
SAFA’s structure emphasizes provincial club membership, with individual falconers joining through their clubs. To join SAFA, clubs must meet constitutional criteria and maintain good standing with their provincial conservation authorities. SAFA’s engagement with the International Association of Falconry (IAF), starting with its membership in 1991, underscores its commitment to international collaboration.
