Wonder of Wool
Shearing
Sheep shearing – it's not just a job, it's an adventure!
My son, true to our heritage is a true shearing pro, having honed his skills with a pair of clippers and a passion for livestock. His journey has taken him across the country, even to the rugged highlands of Scotland! Imagine, a young man standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the sheep, their woolly coats yielding to the rhythmic hum of his clippers. It's a dance of precision and skill, a ballet of fleece and shearing expertise. And just when you think it couldn't get more exciting, add alpacas to the mix! These fluffy, curious creatures, with their mesmerizing eyes and even more mesmerizing fleece, make shearing an entirely new experience. It's a testament to the connection between man and animal, a partnership that results in beautiful, warm wool that keeps us cozy throughout the year. Sheep shearing, while a necessary practice, inherently involves risks for both the sheep and the shearer. The owner of the sheep bears the primary responsibility for ensuring their animals are in good health and condition prior to shearing. They must also provide a safe and suitable environment for the shearing process. The shearer, on the other hand, has a duty to perform the task with skill and care, using appropriate techniques and equipment. Both parties must acknowledge the inherent risks involved, including the possibility of injury to the sheep or the shearer, even with the best intentions. Sheep like a Ill de France ram could weight up to 170kg, putting an immense strain on the shearer's lower back. While death is a rare occurrence during shearing, it can be a possibility, particularly when sheep are placed in unnatural positions for extended periods. Therefore, a clear understanding of liability and indemnification is crucial. The owner may seek indemnification from the shearer for any damages caused by negligence, while the shearer should be protected from liability in cases where death or injury occurs despite using proper techniques and taking all reasonable precautions.
