Brent Visser
1961 - 2004
Brent Visser, a birder of exceptional talent and the son of John Visser, possessed an unwavering fascination with birds. So profound was his passion that his painting contracting business often took a backseat to spontaneous birdwatching and photography expeditions. His meticulous record-keeping and elegant handwriting were hallmarks of his dedicated bird data collection.
Our journeys together, tracing routes from Springbok through Garries and Paleisheuwel to Klaasenbosch, are etched in my memory. We often camped illegally on remote farms, reminiscent of my army days, while he documented birds through his lens and I trapped lanner falcons for Project Falconer. From a startling encounter with baboons in Paleisheuwel to daring abseils down treacherous ridges of the Roorn River Waterfall to photograph black eagle chicks, and the thrilling rediscovery of the Knysna Warbler in Klaasenbosch, the adventures we shared were more rewarding than any destination.
Despite his unique photographs gracing the pages of numerous birding books, Brent never sought or received proper compensation. For him, it was never about financial gain, but about the birds themselves, the shared experiences, and the pure joy these pursuits brought. He eventually joined his father at the Jeffreys Bay aquarium, later taking over its management. Sadly, his life was cut short following a fishing trip, leaving a void in the birding community that no other could fill. Brent was a truly unique and significant individual. Rest in peace.
